Should endovascular repair be attempted in all rAAA patients or just those who are relatively stable?
In the November/December 2009 issue of Vascular Disease Management (http://tinyurl.com/yhyy5av), authors Frank J. Veith and Neal Cayne, discuss the continued high mortality (35–55%) and morbidity rates in patients with ruptured AAAs (rAAA) when treated by standard open surgical methods — despite advances in open surgical techniques and perioperative care. Since the early 1990s, however, endovascular approaches, including stent grafts, have been used to treat rAAA, even in high-risk patients who are poor surgical candidates.
